⚙️ Heat Treatment Guidelines for P20 (1.2311)
P20 is typically supplied in the pre-hardened condition, eliminating the need for heat treatment before machining. However, if required, the following guidelines apply:
Soft Annealing
Heat to 710 – 740°C, cool slowly in furnace.
Achieves maximum Brinell hardness of ≤ 235 HB.
Stress Relieving
Heat to approx. 650°C, hold for 1-2 hours, air cool.
Removes machining stresses and reduces distortion.
Hardening
Austenitize at 840 – 870°C.
Quench in polymer or oil.
Hardness after quenching: approx. 51 HRC.
Tempering
Temper at 482 – 593°C.
Achieves Rockwell C hardness of 28 – 37 HRC.
Typical working hardness: 28 – 32 HRC (in pre-hardened condition).
