H13 is typically supplied in the annealed condition and requires hardening and tempering before use. The following guidelines apply:
Heat to 840 – 870°C, hold, then cool slowly in furnace.
Achieves maximum Brinell hardness of ≤ 229 HB.
Heat to approx. 650 – 700°C, hold for 1-2 hours, air cool.
Removes machining stresses and reduces distortion.
Austenitize at 1000 – 1050°C.
Quench in air, salt bath, or oil (depending on section size).
Hardness after quenching: approx. 54 – 56 HRC.
Temper at 500 – 600°C (twice recommended).
Typical working hardness: 45 – 52 HRC.
Double tempering improves toughness and dimensional stability.
